Quota statutory right, assert many students

STUDENTS OF Allahabad University (AU) organised an ?Arakshan Samarthan Sammelan? on Tuesday in support of reservation to backwards in higher education. The meet was presided over by former president of AU Students Union Dr Nirbhay Singh Patel and conducted by student leader Zia Kaunen Rizvi.

STUDENTS OF Allahabad University (AU) organised an ‘Arakshan Samarthan Sammelan’ on Tuesday in support of reservation to backwards in higher education. The meet was presided over by former president of AU Students Union Dr Nirbhay Singh Patel and conducted by student leader Zia Kaunen Rizvi.

Speaking at the conference, Patel expressed determination to fight till the end for the reservation and said that reservation was the constitutional right of the OBC students and they were adamant on getting reservation in higher education.AU student leaders, including Ripusoodan Yadav, Zia Kaunen Rizvi, Banke Lal Patel, Mohd Khalid, Jais Ram Verma, RP Yadav, Mohit Patel and many others exhorted the Central Government to bring about reservation for backwards in higher education.

Those present on the occasion included Navin Singh Patel, Guddu Yadav, Raghvendra Patel, Chandra Shekhar Singh, Gulab Pal, Vimal Chaudhari , Ram Asre Patel, Ranjit Sonkar and many others.

Meanwhile, the Arakshan Virodhi Chhatra Sangharsh Morcha (AVCSM) activists expressed resentment over the reservation proposal and opposed the decision of the AU admission committee to reduce the seats in graduate and post-graduate courses. The AVCSM activists held a meeting at the AU Student Union on Tuesday which was presided over by AVCSM president Abhishek Shukla.

Addressing the meeting, Shukla said that the AU administration should not apply reservation to the varsity.

He criticised the decision of the AU admission committee to reduce seats in graduate and post graduate courses and urged the AU administration to take immediate decision regarding the fee structure.

AVCSM convenor Vijay Dwivedi criticised the AU admission committee’s decision to terminate evening classes while AVCSM spokesperson Pradeep Narayan Dwivedi accused the Central Government for adopting a dual policy. He said that the government called for education for all, yet it had directed reduction in seats. The government should increase seats as the population had increased substantially.

The AVCSM activists threatened to intensify their protest if their demands were not taken into consideration. Those present in the meeting were Anand Singh, Sunil Shukla, Rajeev Tripathi, Vijay Shukla, Sanjay Pandey, Prabhat Rai, Vikas Tripathi, and many others.

Hailed: AU students hailed the appointment of Dr Verghese Kurian as the Chancellor of the AU. A meeting was held at the student union hall on Tuesday in which AUSU vice-president Brijesh Mishra said that appointment of a dynamic person like Dr Kurian as the Chancellor of the AU would definitely help the varsity scale new heights. Mishra thanked the Central Government for the appointment of Dr Kurian.
