Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to implement the promises made to the state under Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and also grant special category status to the state as approved by the then United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

He said that since the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Andhra Pradesh (on October 22) to lay the foundation stone for its new capital Amaravati, PM Modi should use the opportunity to grant special category status and announce a timeframe for the fulfilment of the commitments like a comprehensive development package for the state.
“Over one year has lapsed since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power but many of the commitments made to the state…remain unfulfilled. I have been to Andhra Pradesh twice over the last year. Everywhere I went, I could sense the severe disappointment and pain of the people that was due to the Centre’s failure to honour its commitment,” said Gandhi.
