Rahul Mukerjea, son of Peter Mukerjea from his first wife Shabnam, was a shy guy with aspirations of becoming a model but after the death of Sheena Bora, he apparently became more reserved.

Rahul lived for quite some time with his mother in Badripur on the outskirts of Dehradun but neighbours hardly knew him until media teams started visiting his place after police unearthed Sheena’s murder earlier this week.

“No, we don’t know about Rahul... People usually keep in touch with neighbours but they (Rahul) were big people,” said Prakash Negi, who lives hardly 100 metres from Rahul’s home in Badripur.

Rahul does not have many friends in Doon. One of them happens to be the son of a tourism industry tycoon. They spend most of their social life at a forest resort, a source said.

When HT went to his grandparents’ home it found the house locked with the grandmother inside. HT also tried to call his uncle but he did not answer.

Rahul was building a separate block inside the 20-acre bungalow named Shabnam and Gul, a family servant told a TV channel. Fond of swimming, Rahul was also constructing a swimming pool in the bungalow, he said.

Shabnam sought the blessings of a Saharanpur-based godman whenever there was a crisis in the family and was particularly disturbed about Rahul taking to drugs and alcohol, the servant said.

Rahul spent his childhood and did his schooling at Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. His maternal grandmother Seema Anand Singh, 80, told HT earlier that Shabnam spent time with her son in the UK.

Police sources said Rahul met Sheena in 2009 when he was living in Mumbai and trying to establish himself as an actor in Bollywood. But Rahul’s plans to enter Bollywood did not take off, and after struggling in Mumbai he went back to Dehradun. That was after Sheena, supposedly, sent him a message calling off the relationship.

Rahul for a brief period after April 24, 2012 tried to figure out where Sheena was and when Indrani told him she had gone to the US he went back to Dehradun.

“The mother and son came to Doon around 2010… Rahul is a very reserved boy and always feels comfortable with his mother,” Seema Anand Singh said. “Shabnam would regularly visit the UK to meet her son when he was there.”

Rahul was not very frequent on social networking sites, with very few online friends, though he was frank in expressing his interests. His Facebook account suggests his favourite book is ‘Confessions Of A Mother Inferior’, a UK best-seller that revolves around a mother and her three children.

The Facebook profile shows Rahul’s favourites on TV are Cartoon Network, MTV Roadies, Thundercats and True Detective while his list of top Hollywood movies includes Lost in Transaction, Silver Linings Playbook, and Black Swan.

Most of the pictures Rahul uploaded on Facebook date back to 2012 – the year Sheena was murdered.

Some of the pictures he uploaded show him as a young man with a keen eye for style. “Do you still look as good if you look at the camera Rahul!!?? Lol, give us a smile mate!" one Michael Newton wrote on a picture of his.

Mumbai police officials who questioned Rahul said he was not working anywhere, and has been staying with his mother in Dehradun.
