“We don’t know how to convey this news to their mother as they were her only hope,” said Shibu Mahato, a cousin of the brothers.

Their mother Rajni Devi (54) lost her husband Shyam Sundar to cancer eight years ago.

The brothers were studying for chartered accountancy exams and working as apprentices with a firm in the building.

The Senguptas of Howrah were luckier. Although the family lost 38-year-old Satyajit Sengupta in the fire, his twin Suranjit
escaped unhurt.

Suranjit had gone to Park Street to meet his brother. As he approached the building, he saw smoke billowing out of it and called up his brother.

“Why are you calling from below? Why don’t you come up,” Satyajit asked him over the phone.

Suranjit screamed that Stephen Court was on fire.

“But the alert was in vain as Satyajit couldn’t escape from the building. The phone connection also got snapped,” a relative said.
