A man was axed to death before the very eyes of his sister at Ahmedpura Chegaon on Sunday, when people were celebrating Rakshabandhan.
Gappu Golwalkar (40) had gone to a market on the outskirts of Khandwa town with his younger sister Rekha Bai to purchase Rakhi and sweets. As the two shopped, a man identified as Raghu from the same village allegedly hit Gappu with an axe.
Gappu died on the spot. The incident created panic in the market, and the accused fled.
The Moghat police registered a case against the accused and launched a manhunt. Mogat police station in-charge Ravindra Yadav, who is investigating the case, said an old enmity was the reason behind the murder.
About two-and-half years ago, the daughter of the accused had reportedly eloped with the victim’s nephew. Locals said both belong to the Bhil community that believes in taking revenge on special occasions so that the day is remembered by their rivals.
