RESENTMENT IS brewing among the medical fraternity over the sacking of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) director, Dr P Venugopal.
Doctors criticised the sacking of Venugopal, an eminent cardiologist who was heading the apex medical institute since July 1, 2003, in strongest possible words and said that it was a big question mark over the autonomy of All India Institute of Medical Sciences

Medical professionals termed the sacking of the AIIMS director as illegal and added that the Institute Body of the AIIMS was neither the appointing nor dismissing authority of its director.

It was the Cabinet Committee which could do the job.

The medical fraternity also believed that Union Health Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss, settled personnel scores with Dr Venugopal by sacking him from the post of AIIMS director. “If politicians think that the voters have given them mandate to resort to any wrong practice, then it is not a healthy sign and will contribute in deteriorating health of this prestigious institute”, said the doctors.
Faculty member at the Institute of Medical Sciences in Banaras Hindu University, which was accorded All India Institute of Medical Sciences status recently, Dr. SK Gupta, also criticised the disgraceful sacking of Dr Venugopal. He said that Institute Body of AIIMS was not authorised to dismiss its director.

The Institute Body of AIIMS is neither appointing nor dismissing authority of its director as it was Cabinet Committee which appoints or dismiss AIIMS’s director”, he said, adding that Dr Venugopal was sacked as he refused to toe the Union health minister’s line.

“It was an ego clash between Dr Ramadoss and Dr Venugopal due to which Dr. Venugopal was sacked forcing the medical faternaty to go on strike”, he said, adding political interference was not good for the “health” of AIIMS.

“We strongly criticise the sacking of Dr Venugopal”, said secretary of the local chapter of the Indian Medical Association, Dr Sanjay Rai, adding Dr Venugopal was a distinguished scholar and had been working for the cause of human welfare without any controversy.

Dr Rai said this decision had generated resentment among medical professionals. He said that Indian Medical Association members would chalk out future course of action as per the guidelines of its headquarters but added that the sacking of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences director was something which had hurt the medical professionals in the city.
