The Maruti Suzuki Workers’ Union claimed none of the workers arrested after the violence was named in the FIR. “None of the 91 workers arrested and sent to jail within hours of the incident is among the 55 mentioned in the FIR,” said Rajinder Pathak, counsel for the union.
Among those in the FIR are 12 union leaders and Jiya Lal, the worker whose fight with a supervisor is suspected to have triggered the violence.
Only the union’s organising secretary Yogesh Kumar was arrested on July 22. His police remand has been extended till Sunday.
Pathak alleged that most of those arrested weren’t even on duty on July 18 and were picked up either in their sleep or from bus and railway stations. The Gurgaon Police refused to comment on the union’s allegations.
Scores of Maruti executives were brutally beaten up in the mob violence and hospitalised while senior human resource executive Awanish Kumar Dev died in the attack.
