Herath came into focus against Australia in 1999 when he captured four wickets on his debut against Australia, confusing the Australians with his mystery ball. He bowls it with an unorthodox bent finger grip sending the ball spinning in the opposite direction.

He finally got a slot in the Sri Lanka squad after an impressive A tour to England. He has hovered on the fringes of the Test squad since then. He has however been a regular for the A team and visited India in December 2003. He was recalled for the third Test against Australia in Colombo.
