The Madhopur embankment saves the city when the Rapti overflows during the rainy season. Inaugurating the construction work, Dr Agrawal said the work would be completed by January 2007. He said during the flood of 1998 and 2000, the embankment developed cracks at many places. This had created a sense of insecurity among the people, he added. Speaking on the occasion, executive engineer Kunj Bihari Lal Srivastav said the height of the embankment would be raised by 85 centimetres.

The embankment was constructed in 1956 and ever since then no strengthening work of the embankment was carried out. Dr Agrawal claimed that the work could be started because of the efforts made by him. He constituted a committee to monitor the construction work.
