“I had applied for 15 numbers of the CH-01-AM series and all the numbers were listed in the auction,” said Rathore, who was convicted for molesting Ruchika Girhotra, a 14-year-old budding tennis player, in 1990. Girhotra committed suicide in 1993.
He has been out on bail since November 2010 and is fighting for his pension, which was withheld in June the same year.
Rathore’s winning bid is the second highest for a fancy registration number in Chandigarh. In May 2010, Punjab resident Narinder Singh Shergill had paid Rs. 10 lakh for the registration number CHO1-AC-0001 for his Toyota SUV Fortuner, Registration and Licensing Authority officials said.
‘VIP’ numbers are fast emerging as a status symbol and car owners are spending big to acquire them. Recently, a man in Punjab spent Rs. 10 lakh for a fancy number for his Nano car, which cost him Rs. 1 lakh.
