Italian striker Antonio Cassano opened the scoring for Real after 67 minutes of stalemate in Ecija's small stadium in southern Spain only for Nolito to equalise ten minutes from time.

Real coach Fabio Capello called up several reserve team players opting to leave leading stars at home including Iker Casillas, Raul, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Fabio Cannavaro and Guti.

But Capello gave David Beckham just his second start in eight games and the former England captain provided the freekick which led to the opening goal.

The Spanish Cup's new two-leg formula gives Real the home advantage in the return leg on November 8.

A brace from Iceland's former Chelsea striker was enough to see champions Barcelona through 2-1 away at Badalona.

A double from Spanish international Miguel Angel Angulo gave first division Valencia a 2-1 win in their first leg tie at third division Racing Portuense.

Celta Vigo were held to a goalless draw at second division Alaves on Tuesday as Levante beat first division rivals Atletico Madrid 1-0.
