Reality check turns to shock for DPI

DIRECTORATE OF Public Instruction (DPI) that decided to conduct surprise checks on high schools in five divisions of the State today got a shocking realty check, as conditions regarding attendance of students and staff, staff availability, teaching quality and administrative measures were found to be pathetic.

Show cause notices were served on several principals, suspensions orders were served to at least two employees and teachers, orders to stop salaries were issued and other actions were initiated by shocked officials of the DPI as they went to school after school unannounced and were greeted with upsetting conditions.

Show cause notices would also be issued to DEOs of Rajgarh and Sehore districts. About 500 schools in Bhopal, Sagar, Gwalior, Chambal and Hoshangabad divisions were conducted today by 50 teams inclusive of District education officers and head masters. Another 500 schools are on the agenda of the inspecting teams on Saturday.

A team led by joint director of DPI K K Pandey and Bhopal DEO Dr O P Mishra visited two schools in Bhopal city, one school each in Bairagarh and Gandhi Nagar, one at Parwalia Sadak on outskirts of city, Shyampur Doraha, Shyampur and Jharkheda in Sehore and Pilukhedi and Kurawar at Rajgarh district.

At the Parwalia Sadak school, the team found that only 11 of the 67 enrolled students were presence. Several teachers were absent and a clerk was found involved in siphoning of funds worth Rs 5.50 lakh. A suspension notice was served immediately on the clerk Raichandani while show cause notice would be served to teachers.

At Shyampur Doraha School, only five students were present. Only eight students had passed the half yearly test and there were no teachers for the important subjects.

Similarly at High School, Jharkhera, only 20 out of 40 students were present and they were found to be very weak in subjects like Hindi, English and Sanskrit.

At Pilukhedi it was found that the principal of the school resided at Bhopal and was often absent. She was also absent today and was served with a show cause notice. The team found that the instructional special CDs on Mathematics, English and Science prepared by the department had not reached most of the schools in total contravention of the directives of the DPI.

Meanwhile after inspections, the officials at Sagar division issued orders of stopping of salaries of 17 teachers, while increments of three teachers were cancelled. A teacher was also suspended in the division. At Damoh district, situation was found to be particularly bad.
