An undertrial was killed by another inmate in a scuffle over a bucket at Begumganj sub-jail in Raisen district on Sunday morning, jail officials said. The deceased, Bhogiram, a resident of village Salaiya, was facing rape charge and had been in jail for over a year under judicial custody, the officials said.

The 45-year-old was taking a bath around 8am when another undertrial, Rajesh, came and asked for the bucket, which Bhogiram refused. This apparently angered Rajesh so much that he snatched the bucket and attacked Bhogiram with it.
Bhogiram, the officials said, suffered serious injuries in the attack and was rushed to the district hospital by jail guards, but he succumbed to injuries during treatment.
Rajesh, 26, a resident of village Chandrapura, was arrested by police on March 22 in the murder of an elderly man of his village. In April, he had assaulted another inmate at the same jail. Following this, he was shifted to Bhopal central jail, but he was sent back to Begumganj two months ago.
Superintendent of Begumganj sub-jail, Jyoti Tiwari, said the incident has been reported to the local police station and the accused booked for murder. He would be formally arrested by the local police, she said. "It was a minor dispute between two inmates that turned ugly," she said.
Angry relatives of Bhogiram held a chakka jam outside the civil hospital on Bhopal-Sagar highway, demanding a judicial probe into the incident. They also demanded monitory compensation for Bhogiram's family.
Later in the day DIG (jail) RS Vijayvargiya and superintendent, Sagar Central Jail, Alka Sonkar also took stock of the situation at Begumganj jail. About a month ago, a prisoner was shot dead by another inmate in Indore jail.
