The initiative is aimed at creating awareness and popularising amongst people in general and the students in particular about the use and benefits of renewable energy technologies,To be constructed on a plot of around 2.5 acres, the park would be the first in the region and would take inspiration from the Kolkata's Energy Education Park.

"Work will soon begin on the park and a dedicated team is already busy chalking out the details. We will be studying the first major Energy Education Park of the country that was set up at Kolkata in February 2000 and adopt its most attractive features," said MNNIT Director Prof Arun Baran Samaddar.

Prof Samaddar said that the plan is to set up the park on a plot near the State Bank of India's MNNIT Branch. "The plot is already vacant and blueprint of the park will soon be made ready," he added.

He said that the plan is to get some very informative and interesting renewable energy exhibits ready for display in the park.

"A number of energy systems, devices and exhibits such as a Global grid which displays a very big globe with solar photovoltaic modules on its surface and power being generated in various parts of the world and being distributed through a super conductor grid, solar photovoltaic street lights, solar photovoltaic pumping unit, model of a micro-hydel power plant and a tidal power plant, a solar hut as well as exhibits showing the chronological history of development of energy from the past to present and the likely future scenario could be inculcated in the proposed park," Prof Samaddar said.

The energy park would give a complete picture of the functioning of the various renewable energy technologies vis-à-vis its potential in meeting energy needs for various utilities. "The innovative ideas that have gone into the creation of the energy park at Kolkata and have been appreciated by all those who have visited the park would be closely studied by the MNNIT experts," he said.

Prof Samaddar said that besides a windmill, the park would also house a small spring and a 'Hall of Concentration' where a visitor would be able to sit and perform meditation. "The plan is to get proper landscaping done of the plot in a way that once a person enters the park, he feels transported to a land of tranquillity and peace.

A knowledge bank on energy too is under consideration for the proposed park.
