The occasion was to mark Major Dhyan Chand's 106th birth anniversary, but it was not out of place to remember the late Vadivelu John Peter. The country's hockey fraternity joined hands to present a cheque of Rs 5.61 lakh to the Olympian's family, which had been living in penury. Vadivelu's wife, Shanti Peter, who received the cheque from sports minister, Ajay Maken, was overwhelmed by the gesture.
