In the last few years, the efficacy of the canal system has been "seriously jeopardised" due to "non- abailability of funds" for the proper repair and maintinance of the system and as a result the carrying capacity of the canals is merely 65 per cent and the farmers at the tail and scarely get any irrigation water.

The State government under the leadership of Capt. Amarinder Singh gave top priority of desilting, cleaning and maintinance of the canals, water courses and the department worked on the operation on war footing by spending more than Rs 20 crore and now farmers are getting water even at the tail end, Punjab Irrigation Minister Gurchet Singh Bhullar told reporters at Dinasahib Gurdwara in this district last evening.

Bhullar said that the department has also made adequate provision of funds for the maintinance of the canal system to ensure its continuous process.
