Rescuers have found 10 bodies of people killed in a ferry sinking on the Yangtze river in central China, and are looking for dozens of others, the official Xinhua News Agency said today.

Twelve people were rescued shortly after the ferry sank Thursday following a collision with a barge in heavy fog, and there have been no reports of anyone found alive since then.

Officials had said the lack of bodies meant most were trapped in the sunken ferry, and Xinhua said authorities haven't been able to find the vessel because of the murky water and fast current.

The Yangtze is one of China's biggest, most congested waterways.

Xinhua said 49 people were still missing following discovery of the 10 bodies. However, officials earlier said a total of 53 people were dead or missing. Xinhua gave no explanation for the discrepancy.

Authorities brought in additional equipment today and were discussing a new salvage program, the report said.
