Senior NCP leader Jayant Patil, who is today named Maharashtra's Home Minister, has said restoring the confidence of people of Maharashtra shattered by the 26/11 terror attacks would be his top priority.
"Tackling terrorism is a challenge, but the state police department is capable of rising to the challenge and we will provide it all assistance," Patil said.
He succeeds another NCP leader from Sangli district of western Maharashtra, R R Patil, who stepped down as deputy chief minister and home minister in the wake of terror attacks.
In the Ashok Chavan-led cabinet NCP's Chhagan Bhujbal is the Deputy Chief Minister.
"NCP president Sharad Pawar and the party has entrusted me the responsibility of handling this sensitive department in these troubled times and I will try to rise to the challenge," Patil said.
"There are several issues...Many challenges. Our police department is capable of handling them and my endeavour will be to ensure that they are provided all help," he said.
Asked if there was any truth in reports that as Finance Minister in the Vilasrao Deshmukh-led government, he had not provided adequate funds to the Home department, Patil said such reports were baseless.
