The complainant, R K Tripathi, a resident of Vaishali Nagar, informed the police that the accused introduced himself as A R Khan, a resident of Polytechnic Road, and told his family that their compensation claims that were rejected in the past have now been accepted and he could get them the amount soon.

He demanded Rs 7,000 and somehow managed to persuade the family that he could get them compensation of Rs 50,000 per family member. The accused took away the cheque promising that he would return soon after getting the papers in order. Interestingly, the ward does not feature in the list of gas-affected wards.

However, he did not return. Later the family realised that they were taken for a ride and informed the Kamla Nagar police that registered a case of fraud. Tripathi had retired from the post of ADG, police said. The Kamla Nagar police have registered a case of fraud in this regard and started investigations.
