Hashmatullah Khan alias Bhooan Mian, aged about 40 years, was shot dead near a pond at Tujarpur under Khaira police station around when he was on his way to district headquarter town Chapra.
Khan's body was recovered from a field on Friday morning.
Police suspect dispute over construction contracts could have led to the murder of Khan, former head of Sakiyan panchayat.
Hundreds of locals blocked Chapra-Marhaura road for over three hours on Friday morning in protest against the killing but lifted the blockade after the local administration assured them of prompt action to apprehend the culprits.
