A 35-year-old man was killed and his wife, 28,seriously injured, when robbers broke into a house in Ulhasnagar on Monday, assaulted the couple and made away with cash and valuables.
According to the police, the incident took place in Vasaar village, near Ulhasnagar, around 3.45 am.
The robbers broke a window at the back of the house and entered. Sunil Ganpat Mhatre, the deceased, and his wife, Ratna, and their children were asleep at the time.
"Ratna heard some noise so she alerted Sunil. The robbers heard this, and hit Sunil on the head with a spade. When Ratna tried to stop the robbers, they hit her with the same spade," said Police inspector RA Dasai, Hill Line police station, Ulhasnagar. Ratna's condition is critical and she has been admitted to Kalyan Hospital, he added.
The police could not determine the value of cash and valuables stolen, as the wife was not in a condition to give them the estimate.
The children, Pratik, 7, Ritu, 7 and Sakshi, 6, were in the same room as Sunil and Ratna but were unhurt as they hid behind the bed on seeing the robbers, said the police. Ritu informed the police that she saw two robbers, both in shorts. The children were unable to give any other detail to the police.
