In an act that aims to appreciate the value of work done by junior party workers, an MLA from Dombivli, Ravindra Chavan, has decided that such workers will be given a life insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh.

While help is always at hand for well-known social activists or politicians, the move seeks to benefit lesser party workers, who put up posters and party banner, and make up the numbers are party morchas and agitations.

Chavan said, “Recently, Sudhir Kadam my friend, and junior party worker, died. He was the sole breadwinner in his family. For people like him, I have decided to launch the Karyaraksha scheme, which will provide their families immediate help.”

Currently, there are at least 5,000 to 10,000 junior party workers in various political parties and social organisations. “We will now start distributing forms for the insurance policy from my office. Any junior party worker or social activist can fill it. We will pay the policy premium and their families can avail the insurance in case of an eventuality,” Chavan added.

Chavan said he had been in talks with various insurance companies. From these, he had shortlisted ten, and will purchase the policies from them.
