RS poll: NCP won't back Cong candidate

Congress and NCP, partners in ruling DF government in Maharashtra, are headed for confrontation over the June 15 Rajya Sabha election. The election isbeing held to fill up the vacancy created by death of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
Congress had decided to field its candidate for this seat but NCP said on Sunday that it would not support the Congress' candidate.
"We have decided not to support Congress for the June 15 election as they did not support our candidate in recent legislative council elections," NCP Maharashtra unit President Arun Gujarathi said.

Monday is the last day for filing nomination for the election. Congress sources said party had decided to field Avinash Pande, former office-bearer of NSUI for the election.
The bypoll is being held to fill up the vacancy created by death of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
When asked whether the state leadership may succumb to the pressure from the Central leadership, including party chief Sharad Pawar, Patil said it will not happen in this case.
