The Magh Mela concluded with the Shivratri Snan on Sunday. A gang of about 50 Safai Karamcharis was made to stay in Magh Mela area to clean the ghat for the Snan but their payment was not made for all the wrong reasons.

According to the health department sources the district magistrate had already released sufficient fund for the timely payment to these Safai workers as most of them had come from Banda, Fatehpur and Kaushambi districts.

"Since the fund was not released on any particular head some senior health department officers quickly made payments from the same fund to some local parties which had set up temporary toilets in Magh Mela area. Obviously there was vested interest involved behind making these payments. Also they wanted to create an unnecessary pressure on the chief medical officer," said a health department employee on condition of anonymity.

However, with non-payment of the wages the Safai Karamcharis are in a deep trouble. The camps in the Magh Mela area in which they were living have already been removed and now they are forced to spend night in open on Parade ground. Angry over the apathetic attitude of officials towards their problems the Safai Karamcharis had also staged dharna at the CMO office on Wednesday.

Holding broom and stick in their hands they locked the CMO office doors and demanded immediate payment of their wages. The CMO, however, assured to make payment of their wages within three days.
