Same gotra marriage unacceptable: Khap

The Khap panchayat, supreme social body of khaps and castes, passed as many as 14 resolutions on Sunday. In a marathon meeting that continued through out the day, heads of different khaps discussed various social issues in detail, mainly focusing on 'marriages within same caste' and allegations on khaps for supporting honour killings.

The panchayat condemned the 'marriages within same caste' in unison expressing hope that government will take appropriate steps for amendments in Hindu Marriage Act, which will hopefully bring an end to this anti-tradition marriages. Issuing a warning to the governments against their unwarranted interference in the decision of khap panchayats, the heads of khaps demanded to approve the status of Lok Adalats to Khap Panchayats. “Governments should endorse the genuine decisions of the Khap Panchayats,” suggested one of the resolutions.

Addressing the gathering, Mahendra Singh Tikait, organiser of the Panchayat and head of the Baliyan Khap, compared the issue of 'same caste marriages' with a bare sword saying, “It always hangs over the heads of the clan”.

He showed his solidarity with the Panchayat, which out rightly disapproved marriages in same caste.

“These marriages are not acceptable to us,” roared the Panchayat demanding to put a ban even on the registration of such unethical marriages.

“Such marriages should be declared illegal,” demanded the Panchayat.
