It was a perfect blend of colours and couplets at 'Sangam', the painting exhibition by Dr Zaheda Khanam which was inaugurated at Nirala Art Gallery, Allahabad University Delegacy premises, on Sunday afternoon.

Veteran artist and art critic Prof Ram Chandra Shukla and Prof Rajendra Kumar, former HoD Hindi, Allahabad University inaugurated the event.

Each painting of Dr Khanam voiced her strong feelings regarding the issues pertaining to womankind and varied social issues. Her sensitiveness as a painter were revealed through the paintings titled 'Prateeksha', 'Pranay', 'Daily life' and 'Gupshup'.

As a painter she tried to express the issues that often irk her.

If 'Unity in diversity' resounded the message of time to unite against the destructive forces then another colourful composition showed the destructive temperament of people which is sure to devoid us of nature and its multiple gifts to mankind.

Her affinity towards nature were revealed in few of her landscapes. With altogether 24 of her paintings adorning the walls of the art gallery, it was a welcome surprise for the visitors to acknowledge the artist's talent as a poet too. As a poet, Dr Khanam is ready with her collection which were displayed together with her paintings. Ranging from topics including education, arrival of Bush in India, the affection of mother and child, her poems touched varied aspects of life.

"Avaran kuch bhi ho, andar se sab ek hain. Rakt ka rang bhi ek hai, jis se bole wo zuba bhi ek hai. Khushi aur gam ka izhar bhi ek hai, phir kyo nafraton ka dher hai", is an example of her composition.

The photographs regarding her research work were also displayed which is based on the topic of 'Birds and animals in Mughal miniature paintings'.

The exhibition will remain open for the visitors on April 11.
