Saqlain Mushtaqindia Updated: Jan 29, 2003 23:54 IST
A magician for Surrey, Saqlain is a spin wizard and, with Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, one of the foremost exponents of the art in the world.
Some have seen him as a revolution in the art of attacking off-spin bowling, reintroducing the need for off-spinners in the one-day game.
His international debut came against Sri Lanka in 1995, but it was not until 1996/97 that Saqlain really earned world notoriety with five-wicket hauls against Australia and New Zealand.
His ability to bowl mystery balls, which turn the other way and puzzle the batsmen completely, has led to records tumbling.
Saqlain is the fastest bowler to reach 100 one-day wickets and belongs to an elite category of spin bowlers who have claimed hat-tricks in one-day cricket on not one, but two occasions - both against Zimbabwe.
It is a credit to his control that he regularly bowls at the death and, as a batsman, he has earned a reputation as a useful tail-ender.
