The ground was built on the 50 acre land donated by the Gujarat Government.

Widely known as Motera, the ground hosted its first Test in November 1983 when India took on the West Indies.

Yet another typical Indian, batsman friendly pitch, the highest innings score (583/7 declared) was achieved by India in 1999/00 against New Zealand.

In 1993, Kapil Dev scored a world Test record of 432 wickets on the first morning of the Test against Sri Lanka.

In 1999, the Sardar Patel Stadium saw Sachin Tendulkar score his first Test double century.

India have played a total of six matches at this venue, out of which the home team has won two and lost one, while three matches ended up in a draw.
