FORMER PRINCIPAL scientific officer at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Roop Singh, has hit back at allegations that he switched the cartridges in the Jessica Lall murder case, which eventually weakened the case in court.
Inspector Surinder Sharma, the investigating officer in the Jessica case, has reportedly said that Singh had changed the cartridges at the CFSL at the behest of UP politician D.P. Yadav, whose son Vikas was an accused in the case. Sharma, incidentally, has been under fire for shoddy investigation in the case.
Speaking from Una in Himachal Pradesh, Singh told HT: “This new twist in the case is being deliberately introduced by the police after six years to protect their own skin and save the rich and the mighty.”
“How does the police prove that the cartridges sent to the CFSL hadn’t already been changed? My evidence was never recorded,” he said. “Since the weapon of offence hadn’t been recovered we couldn’t match the cartridges with it.
Examination of the empty cartridges revealed that they had been fired from different weapons.”
“After examination, we’d told the police to search for two weapons. In the absence of weapon of offence, this was all we could do,” he said. “Our job was to just give scientific guidance in the investigation.”
Singh, who retired after serving the CFSL for more than 30 years, said manipulation of evidence at the lab was not possible. “At every stage, things are checked and cross-checked.” He said he had never met D.P. Yadav. “No one has ever dared to approach me,” he said. Singh said he would seek legal opinion on filing a defamation suit. “The Delhi Police should have checked the records at the CSFL before casting aspersions on me.”
