SECURITY AT the official residence of Allahabad University (AU) Vice-Chancellor has been strengthened following two student leaders of Iswar Saran Degree College (ISDC) barging into his house without an appointment or permission on Saturday night.  The VC Prof Rajen Harshe was present at his residence when the incident took place.

Acting upon the security breach, the AU administration this morning tightened the security at the VC's residence by increasing the number of security personnel and also getting two armed policemen posted at the house who will henceforth be on a vigil round-the-clock.

Sources inform that two student leaders of ISDC went to the official residence of the VC, located within the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) premises on Saturday night at around 9 pm reportedly with the intention of handing over a memorandum.

The students, sources say, wanted to inform the VC of their plan to go on a hunger strike in support of some of their demands from Sunday.

The students managed to pass through the gates and even enter the house without being checked by anyone or stopped by anyone. It was reportedly the VC who found himself suddenly face to face with the students inside his house without any prior notice.

Insiders claim that the VC called up AU Proctor Prof Jata Shankar and expressed his unhappiness over the incident.

It is to be recalled that the VC has been under pressure from various groups of students--some demanding reservations and others seats hike among other things--since he took charge around eight months back. Of late the student leaders have intensified their agitation and the VC has gone public with his anger over repeated disturbances that are taking place on the varsity campus. He had also taken out a peace march recently to register his unhappiness and issue a call for co-operation.

On being contacted, AU Proctor Prof Jata Shankar confirmed the barging-in by two students on Saturday night and said, "We have taken the incident very seriously and are trying to identify the culprits. Meanwhile, the security of the VC's residence has been increased and with the help of the district administration have got posted two armed cops at the house. These cops will guard the house along with varsity's own armed security personnel round the clock," he said.
