Nepal tightened security in cities and along highways Monday ahead of a three-day general strike called by Maoist rebels.

The strike, which starts Tuesday, is part of the rebels' violent campaign to turn this Himalayan kingdom into a communist state. Businesses, shops and schools will likely close during the strike because people fear attacks by the separatists.
The Home Ministry said it ordered security forces to increase patrols in urban areas and along highways.
Fighting between the government soldiers and the rebels, who claim inspiration from Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, has escalated since the insurgents withdrew from a seven-month cease-fire in August. The insurgency has claimed more than 9,000 lives.
