While sources said the militants belonged to the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba and included a local and a foreign militant, officials were yet to confirm their identity.

“Two militants have been killed in Pulwama’s Gussu village. The identity of the militants is being ascertained,” said a police spokesperson in Srinagar.

According to sources , the gunfight started after 53 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army, Special Operations Group of the police and 183 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force launched a cordon and search operation at Harpora locality of Gusssu village on Wednesday evening.

The militants, who were holed up at a residential building in the locality, started firing when they were challenged.

Sources said the militants tried to break the cordon around 1am on Thursday, but were gunned down by the security forces.

Police however denied rumours about the presence of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in the area. Young men in the locality had held protests and resorted to stone-pelting after there were rumours of Burhan being trapped in the village.
