Religious Hindu leaders including sadhus, sanyasis, dandi swamis, saints and devotees of the Ganga took oath to ensure cleanliness of the river Ganga from Gangotri to Gangasagar.

This convention was organised under the banner of ‘Ma Ganga Pradushan Mukti Abhiyan Samiti-India’ which was formed during Magh Mela-2006 in Allahabad.

Jagat Guru Shankaracharya Swami Vasudevananad Sarswati said the Union and State governments had been ignoring the importance of religious issues such as Gau (cow), Govind (Lord), Geeta (Religious Book), Gayatri and Ganga since independence.

He said the flow of the Ganga water was stopped in the Tehri dam while wastewater of factories and industries were flowing in the river. This was a matter of grave concern. He said the agitation would continue till the flow of the Ganga was restored.

Speaking as a special guest, Swami Narendrananad Sarswati said in a bid to get mass supports, small committees and organisations would be formed in the cities of the adjoining areas of Ganga from Gangotri to Gangasagar. He demanded from the Union government to declare the Ganga as a national asset.

National coordinator of samiti, Shri 1008 Swami Hari Chatanya Bramhchari and Shri Bhavani Nandan Yati called upon devotees to be ready for a massive agitation.

Coordinator of Samiti Kamlesh Rai, Dandi Swami Vimal Dewashramjee Maharaj (President of Dandi Swami), Dandi Swami Bramhashram Jee Maharaj and Dandi Swami Shankarashram jee Maharaj of Hariyana, Narayan Guru and Shivkumar Shukla were of the view that pollution was increasing in the Ganga day by day but nothing concrete was done to clean it.

Earlier, an awareness rally was taken out from Machli Bandar Mutt and after covering prominent routes, it culminated at Dashashwemedh ghat where a religious function, Ganga Pujan was also convened under the supervision of Babu Maharaj of Gangotri Sewa Samiti.
