Around 200 Shiv sainiks, including Thane MLA Eknath Shinde and Kalyan MP Anand Paranjpe, staged a roadblock on Ghodbunder Road to protest against the delay in the construction of the Kapurbawdi flyover on Monday.
The Kapurbawdi flyover is part of a Rs 213-crore MMRDA project, under which four flyovers will be constructed on the Ghodbunder Road apart from three others in the city. The work on the flyover was supposed to start in January this year.
“This protest is to stop the heavy traffic coming into the city. Many innocent lives have been lost due to accidents. We want the government to start the construction of the flyover soon,” said Shinde.
Traffic was disrupted for more than an hour as Shiv Sena activists burnt tyres of trucks and buses. A bhoomi-pujan was also conducted.
The protestors also collected around Rs 3,000 as donation, which was later handed over to District Collector A L Jarhad.
The police arrested 35 people, including Shinde and Paranjpe.
“The Shiv Sena had asked for permission to hold a rally and not a raasta roko. The arrested were later released on a personal bond,” said DCP (Zone V), Bhujangrao Shinde.
