A high voltage drama gripped Bhilwara town on Monday after seven members of a Dalit family climbed atop a mobile tower demanding jobs as sanitary workers.

Having failed to land jobs in the recruitment process of the Bhilwara Municipal Council (BMC), the family began its protest around 8am and threatened to jump off if authorities did not agree to their demand.

The tower-top protest by Shankar Lal, his wife and their children ended after four hours following an assurance from the district administration and BMC chairman Anil Baldwa that their demand would be considered as top priority.

The protesters were taken into custody after climbing down. Even as he was being taken away, Shankar Lal told mediapersons, “My family had filled four applications for the post of sanitary workers, but not one of us was recruited after the interview. On other hand, two or three members from many other families got the jobs. This is injustice.”
