Jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammad Shahabuddin's father and wife have filed petitions for anticipatory bail in a Bihar court, a police official said on Tuesday.
They have been on the run after non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against them for alleged possession of illegal arms and violation of the Arms Act three days ago.
Bihar Police have sounded an alert to arrest them after the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Siwan district issued the warrants against the MP's father SM Habibullah, his wife Hina Shahab and his brother Shamsuddin on Thursday.
Shahabuddin's brother has not filed for anticipatory bail.
"Police have set up a special task force to arrest Shahabuddin's family members, who were absconding after arrest warrants," the police official said.
Police last week approached the court to obtain arrest warrants against the three under the Arms Act after they failed to comply with the police order to surrender their arms. They had allegedly acquired the arms illegally from dubious sources.
Shahabuddin's family members had been ordered by former Siwan district magistrate CK Anil to turn in 10 guns and rifles to the police but they had refused to do so, police said.
Shahabuddin is currently lodged in the Bhagalpur Jail. The jailed MP faces over 40 criminals cases, including that of murder, abduction, possession of illegal arms and stolen vehicles. He was in the news last week for his alleged visit to Jammu and Kashmir to procure arms from a banned militant outfit.
