Parents of 19-year old Tulsi had a simple dream -- to marry her off to a "decent boy" -- but a stone thrown by protestors in Kashmir has shattered it.
Daughter of a rag-picker Vijay Kumar from Punjab, Tulsi had translocated to the valley with her family six years back in search of greener pastures. But now her left eye has got permanently damaged during a stone-pelting protest in Nowgam.
Unaware of the reasons for the ongoing protests, Tulsi was collecting garbage, which was the only source of her family's income, when a stone hit her eye.
She was immediately taken to hospital but the damage caused by the stone was too much to be undone.
"I wanted to marry her off to a decent boy but the injury had made her a handicapped. She will have to carry this throughout her life. What can we do? We are poor people and
cannot afford costly treatment. Doctors have told that her eye cannot be cured but she will be able to see with one eye," Tulsi's father Vijay Kumar said.
Kumar said he plans to move back to Punjab as things are getting out of control in the valley.
"These protests have made our life difficult. If we do not work for a day, we will not have anything to eat in the night. That is why she had gone out to collect garbage so that some money can be earned," he said.
