Six underground organisations of the Northeast, including the ULFA, KLO and NDFB, have called upon people to boycott the Independence Day celebration and observe a general strike.
In an e-mail sent to a section of the media, ULFA's publicity secretary Ruby Bhuyan urged the people to boycott the celebration and observe a general strike to "protest against the colonial occupation of Indian forces".
The boycott and general strike call by the outfits are given every year on Independence Day and Republic Day and the run-up to the celebrations has been often marred by violence.
Already in Assam, ULFA militants have struck in Guwahati and Jorhat while engaing in stray incidents of violence in some other places.
Bhuyan in the communication clarified that the call for the general strike in Assam has been confined to Guwahati city in view of the misery caused to the people due to the devastating flood.
Among the other outfits that have jointly called for the agitation is the NLFT and TPDF of Tripura and MPLF, an umbrella organisation of militant organisations of Manipur.
