They reached the district magistrate’s office and filed their nominations under tight security. These papers would be scrutinised on March 9 while the clear picture of the contesting candidates would emerge on March 11 after withdrawal of the nominations.

On Wednesday, Samajwadi Party candidate Ram Bhual Nishad, Hindu Yuva Vahini candidate Dhiraj Singh Harish and Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shital Pandey filed their nomination papers. Candidate of Purvanchal Vikas Parishad Sanjayan Triphati, Bahujan Samaj Party supported candidate Vipin Kumar Singh, Independent candidate Hari Nath filed their nomination papers.

Earlier, BJP candidate Upendra Dutt Shukla and Congress candidate Shiv Shambhu Nishad had filed their nomination papers. The Supreme Court has declared the election at Kauri Ram assembly segment null and void after hearing a writ filed by Independent candidate whose nomination papers were rejected by then returning officer and district magistrate.

BSP had not fielded any candidate in this election, however, BSP supported candidate Vipin Kumar Singh filed his nomination papers. Vipin is son of former MLA Ambika Singh the archrival of Rambhual Nishad.

A crack had surfaced within the BJP over selection of candidate. Earlier, former district president of the party, Upendra Shukla had filed his nomination papers as a party candidate and divisional president of the party had also cleared his candidature but on the last moment another BJP candidate Shital Pandey filed his nomination papers.

Sources said BJP and Hindu outfits were trying to field a joint candidate in the election and hectic lobbying had started for Shital Pandey who could be a common candidate of the Hindu Vahini and BJP. BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, who is the patron of Vahini was out of station, therefore, amicable solution to the candidate issue could not be made. Polling for the election would be held on March 25 and the counting on March 27.
