About 40 people were injured in the accident in Rangpur district, 250 kms north of the national capital, Dhaka, according to private TV station ATN Bangla.

Thirty of those injured were being treated at state-run Rangpur Sadar Medical College Hospital, the report said. Several others were released after first-aid treatment.

Most of the victims were passengers on the bus, which was traveling from Dhaka to Rangpur, the report said without providing further details.

Police officials were not immediately available for comment. Fatal road accidents, often blamed on faulty vehicles, unsafe driving and lax enforcement of rules, claim 5,000 lives each year in Bangladesh.
