Delivering a talk on ‘Women’s Right in Republic of India’ here on Saturday he said that mere formulation of laws to check crime against women would not serve the purpose.
“What is needed is implementation of such laws,” Justice Chatterjee said. Justice Chatterjee further said that the judiciary should play the role in this regard to the best of its ability so as to bring the women on par with the men in the society.
Emphasising on empowerment of women, he elaborated various laws including 73rd and 74th Amendment of the Constitution that introduced political empowerment to women.
The Sapru Law Institute organised the talk at the Judges’ Guest House at Drummond Road. Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Justice AK Yog, a senior Judge of the Allahabad High Court, who is also the executive-president of the Sapru Law Institute.
Introducing the subject, a High Court lawyer, Shambhu Chopra said that in spite of passing several laws, the crime against women was on the rise.
He laid stress on the need to facilitate the empowerment of women.
