I would never do anything that I don’t feel like, be it [something] as big as a film, or as petty as buying a pair of shoes,” declares Sonam Kapoor, smiling like the queen of all she surveys during this interview at the IIFA awards.

What she feels like doing at the moment are light roles, a change from Sakina in Saawariya and Bittu in Delhi-6. “I have experimented enough. I guess I’ll take a step back now. And do a bit [of] casual roles.”

If by casual Sonam means candyfloss rom-com, fans will have to wait till after her next film, father Anil Kapoor’s home production Ayesha. The story is based on Jane Austen’s Emma, and while Emma has her moments of banter with Mr Knightley, her friend and admirer, this is far from fluff. “I love Mr Knightley,” says Sonam. “I’d like to date a man like Mr Knightley. I am so excited to begin the film.” Set in Delhi, the film will be shot once she is back from the IIFA gala.

While the actress in her is smacking her lips at the thought of yet another exciting film, the star in her is enjoying the celebrity status, too. “I am born in a star family,” says Sonam, who has never bothered to hide her pride in being a superstar’s daughter. “If I wanted to be just an actor, I’d have gone to theatre. But I like being a star, so here I am.”
