Announcing this at a press conference in Lucknow, SP National General Secretary Amar Singh said the party would hold demonstrations at all district headquarters in the state on the day to register its protest.

He said SP leaders had also spoken to CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat over the matter and it had been decided that a general strike would be called on June 13.

Terming the hike as "anti-people", he said it would have its effect in other sectors of the economy and prices of other services would also go up.

"The sensex-oriented UPA government is concerned only about the five per cent of people and not bothered about the welfare of the 95 per cent," Singh alleged.
