When police stations get auctioned and policing comes to a halt, the crime figures are bound to rise. And this is what is exactly happening in Allahabad range.

Insiders say, barring Kaushambi, police stations in the remaining three districts have a price tag ranging between Rs 70,000 and Rs 1.25 lakh. Any sub- inspector who pays the price can head the police station of his choice in these districts.
On the other hand despite all-out efforts to minimise crime the graph has increased in comparison to last year's records till July 15. An example can be had from Allahabad district alone. As many as 133 vehicles were lifted from January 1 to July 15 this year. Police too have the same record but at the same time the figure has been brought down to 114 by the cops themselves. Police sources said the fact that crime was being minimised could be ascertained following inquiry by a senior police officer. In many cases complaints were taken but then dismissed within no time even before the victim reached his house, said well informed sources in the police.
As far as crime graph is concerned it has zoomed up in many areas. Interestingly murder record has gone down even though the real picture is different. Sources said this too was happening due to minimisation process, Instead of recording murder under section 302 the same was being allowed to be written under section 304 ie culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Meanwhile 167 cases of burglary were committed in this period in comparison to 142 last year. While 162 cases of vehicle thefts were reported last year, this figure has been achieved this year by July 16. Two cases of kidnapping for ransom have been recorded till now while last year there was jut one case.
There has been substantial increase in other cases of kidnappings. This year 96 cases of kidnapping have been recorded while last year the number was 73. This year 40 cases of criminal assault on women have been reported so far in the range as against 27 last year. Fifty cases of atrocities and harassment of women have been lodged this year as against 42 last year.
Police sources said, 82 women were kidnapped and raped in the range this year as against 57 last year. Crime against women in general has seen an upward trend while cases of chain snatching have also gone up alarmingly, accepted a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
