Land sentries at the southern perimeter of the harbour had seen three suspicious looking boats early in the morning and alerted the navy, which immediately dispatched its Fast attack Craft and destroyed one of the boats.

The two which escaped, were pursued and destroyed 11 nautical miles away.

Reporting the incident, the Defence Ministry website did not say that the intruding boats were LTTE.

It only said that the boats were "suspicious" and added: "No fishing vessels are allowed to come into the restricted zone of the Colombo port 10 nautical miles seaward from Colombo port.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Naval authorities."
