Moves are afoot to appoint former Supreme Court judge Justice BN Srikrishna as Chairman of the Sixth Pay Commission that will go into revision of wages for 33 lakh Central government employees.

"Informally I have been approached to head the commission but I have made my reservation clear that I will not move out of Mumbai," 65-year-old Justice Srikrishna said when contacted on phone.

Srikrishna, a former judge of the Bombay High Court, had headed the inquiry commission that went into the Mumbai communal violence in 1993 in the aftermath of Babri Masjid demolition.

Meanwhile, Finance Ministry officials said the proposal for appointing Chairman of the sixth pay commission has gone to Prime Minister's office and so far no clearance has been communicated.

The terms of reference would be finalised after the appointment of the chairman.

The cabinet cleared the proposal for setting up the sixth pay commission in July.
