Polling parties have moved to their respective centres and the administration has made elaborate security arrangements for the election.

There are 17 candidates in the fray for the mayoral post. They include Anju Chaudhary (BJP), Sitaram Jaiswal (SP), Ramesh Gupta (Congress), Chhedi Jaiswal (BSP), Janardhan Singh (RLD), Mohd Islam (NLP) and Independent candidate Prof Anirudh Prasad. The current scenario points to a direct fight between Sitaram Jaiswal and Anju Chaudhary.

Polling for 70 wards of the municipal corporation will also take place on Tuesday.

There are 695 candidates contesting the corporators’ election in various wards. As many as 6.45 lakh voters will decide their fate.

The authorities have set up 198 polling stations, of which 85 are sensitive.

District magistrate Dr Hariom directed the zonal and sector magistrate to intensify patrolling in their respective areas and to strictly implement the election code of conduct. Videography will be conducted at sensitive polling booths and stringent action would be taken against those who violate the election code of conduct.

Divisional commissioner Dr Moolchand Yadav directed subordinate officials and election employees to maintain transparency and honesty during polling. The movement of traffic will be restricted. The city has been divided in seven zones. One section of the RAF, eight companies of the PAC, 26 police station incharges, along with the constables and home guards, have been deployed to conduct the election. Forty police pickets have been set up.
