Stage set for ZP chief polls

THE STAGE was set for an almost direct fight between Samajwadi Party candidate Chinta Yadav and the joint Opposition candidate Yashoda Devi for the zila panchayat chairperson?s post after filing of nomination papers here on Saturday. Four nomination papers were filed and after scrutiny, all were found valid .Those who filed their nominations included Yashoda Devi, Chinta Devi, BSP supported candidate Manju Singh and Malti Devi. January 3 is the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers. On January 2, the district magistrate has convened a meeting of all the newly elected Zila Panchayat (ZP) members to distribute photo identity cards among them. Voting and counting of votes will be held on January 7. No single party has a clear majority in the 60-member board of the Zila Panchayat.

There are seven members of the SP while BJP and saffron brigade enjoy the support of 14 members. Independent panchayat members will play a decisive role in upcoming election and hectic lobbying has started to mobilise support of panchayat members.The election has become crucial for SP leaders and BJP MP Adityanath. Both are leaving no stone unturned to save their prestige and ensure the success of candidates.

They were adopting different tactics to influence the voters. Deputy Returning officer NN Lal rejected an objection filed against Samajwadi Party candidate Chinta Yadav by joint Opposition candidate Yashoda Devi. The officer said no fact was concealed by Chinta Devi.

Azamgarh : SP candidate Hawaldar Yadav and Rakesh Yadav of the BSP filed nominations for the zila panchayat chairman’s post. The Congress and the BJP, which each have around four-five zila panchayat members, have not opened their cards.

Basti : CABINET MINISTER Raj Kishore Singh’s mother Sharda Singh filed her nomination papers for the post of Basti zila panchayat chairperson as a Samajwadi Party candidate.

Kheri: A neck and neck contest between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is the on cards to grab the prestigious post of the Zila Panchayat chairperson. SP candidate Anita Giri, sister-in law of the Hyderabad legislature Arvind Giri and BSP candidate Anoop Verma filed their nomination papers today.
