This is one of the survivors in the over-heated Connaught Place area, the birthplace of many a great restaurateur and the graveyard of great ideas that came before their time. But longevity doesn't seem to have taken a toll on the refurbished restaurant, launched in 1957, famous for its tall windows providing an unhindered view of the hyperactivity below.
The menu is as old-worldly as the Hindi film music playing in the background and the charm exuded by the ancient waiters, reminding you of the stories of railway canteens you've heard from your parents. The Mutton Cutlets will help you get over your nostalgia for the late Bankura; the Club Sandwiches are definite must-haves; the soups are conventional and creamy; tea is served just the way it should be (an art forgotten by most restaurants); and the menu still has Fruit Gateaux and other such Continental specialities that went out of fashion with the first wave of Art Deco. The meal-time waiting is a testimony to Standard's undiminished popularity.
