A proposal in this regard has been submitted by the Head of the AU Statistics Department Prof GS Pandey to the AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe recently and will now be put before the AU Works Committee for approval.

"We plan to construct a modern computer lab for our UG students for whom we have started computer practicals from 2004-05 session and have forwarded a proposal to the VC in this regard. At present we have a single lab equipped with 15 computers on which we are forced to accommodate both the 25 odd MSc/MA students and around 85 BSc/BA students," Prof Pandey informed.

The department has asked for 45 Pentium IV computers for the lab along with one server, one 5 KVA UPS and five airconditioners besides furniture for the new lab.

"The aim is to have a fully networked lab that can also aid the research scholars and the teachers," Prof Pandey added.

Prof Pandey said that the department has also planned to construct a 30X40 feet hall for the new lab, a 30X30 feet hall for PG lab besides a 30X60 feet hall as a library and reading room. "We have also decided that five 10X10 feet rooms will be constructed for the research scholars, female students and the teachers. The aim is to construct the new rooms on top of the building housing the department," he added.

The AU Statistics Department was initially part of the Mathematics Department and emerged as an independent department only in 2001 and is functioning from the Nehru Science Complex for the past around two years. The department at present has three teachers including two Professors and a Reader with one post each of a Professor and a Reader lying vacant.

The department's future plans include updating UG and PG courses with an aim to make them more interdisciplinary besides introducing a basic course in Statistics for students of other disciplines.
